Thursdays Child

A book review on Thursdays Child by Sonya Hartnett

Thursdays Child is an interesting fictional novel set during the great Depression in Australia. The main character is Harper Flute. This book is about her, her family, and her brother Tin.

Tin is a natural born digger. One day, when Tin and Harper's new baby brother Caffy is born he sneaks away under the shanty ( a small house) and begins to dig. Soon this becomes an obsession, such an obsession that Tin takes up permanent residence under the shanty.

The book continues to talk about Harpers life an as her Da (Dad) turns to alcoholism, her families struggle against life. I won't give away too much of the book but when to greedy men steal Harper and her families cows. This made me cross.

Thursdays child is extremely detailed and descriptive with lots of hidden surprises. I would recommend it for mature readers, as although it talks through a child it has a very shocking and disturbing end.

My Buddy Brodie

Every Friday we get to spend some time with the younger children of Muritai School. Our class heads over the road to room 5 to meet our "buddies". My Buddies name is Brodie. He is in year 2 and he is very funny. I test them on his spelling words, he usually gets most of them right. Next I read a story to him which is difficult as his attention wanders easily. When he does pay attention I get him to read to me, he is very clear and fluent. I enjoy spending time with him and he enjoys spending time with me. Unfortunately I only get to spend half an hour with him each week, I believe that we should get to spend 1 hour with each other every week. The single negative thing about him is that he is obsessed with the world 'butt'. To conclude it is fun to spend time with him and he enjoys spending time with me.
